New York City: A First Impression

A fresh pumpernickel bagel with turkey, bacon, and sauerkraut was a delicious introduction to a new but long awaited city. We stepped into a packed deli, recommended by a professor. It was a rushed feeling, walking in – that’s the only way I have to describe it. The tables were full, silence non-existent, and choices indefinite.

We found a seat, in the middle of a table. To my right was a middle-aged man waiting for his sandwich. His breath was quick and his eyes tired. On the side of his face was a decent sized gash. I was intrigued by the story he had to tell without him uttering a single word.

My attention was quickly drawn to the three individuals who sat to our left, one of whom was a Michigan native and current NYC journalist. He told his story and gave his advice.

My sandwich was a custom made one. And as for the strange combination? Well, if there’s anywhere in the world to take chances and potentially make mistakes, it is New York City. So I gave it a try, but was not disappointed.

The rain had quickened at this point, and with a thin jacket and camera on my being, I was a bit stuck. I borrowed an umbrella from the ground underneath my chair. It seems it was lost anyway.
